Orders for a total of 700 new carriages have now been
placed on behalf of Go-Ahead's South Central franchise.
The new trains will be manufactured by Bombardier and
leased to South Central by Porterbrook Leasing which is
financing the order at a cost of approximately £856
million, the biggest order for new trains to be
manufactured in the UK since privatisation.

The investment in new trains for South Central to replace
its slam door trains, started when Govia (Go-Ahead's
joint venture with French transport group Keolis)
purchased the existing franchise in August 2001, with an
initial order for 240 carriages, worth approximately £200
million.

The latest order for the manufacture and supply of a
further 460 carriages is worth approximately £374
million.

Maintenance and service of all 700 carriages throughout
the 20 year franchise accounts for £282 million of the
total cost.

Deliveries of Bombardier's Class 375 Electrostars are
expected to commence in the summer of 2002 and be
completed in 2004.

Commenting on the order, Keith Ludeman, Go-Ahead's Chief
Executive, Rail said: 'This order demonstrates our
desire to get on with the job of improving South Central
as quickly as we can. In our bid we undertook to procure
1,000 new carriages. We are ordering 700 new carriages
within eight months of taking over the existing franchise
- well ahead of signing our new 20 year franchise'

'We aim to replace approximately 600 mark 1 slam door
carriages by December 2004. It is clearly important that
we had assurances regarding the timely delivery of new
trains and Bombardier were able to provide these.'
